Tree Removal — The Basics
Not every problem tree needs to come down, and a good arborist will tell you honestly which one you're dealing with. As a general rule, removal is the right call when:
- The tree is dead or dying, with no viable recovery path
- More than 50% of the tree is damaged or diseased
- The trunk has large cracks, cavities, or visible decay
- The tree is leaning significantly toward a structure, vehicle, or utility line
- Root damage is severe enough to make the tree unstable
If the issue is overgrown branches, crossing limbs, or minor dieback, pruning or trimming is almost always the better and less expensive answer. When we come out for a free estimate, that's exactly the evaluation we'll do — recommend removal only when it's genuinely necessary.
Tree removal pricing varies based on the size of the tree, its location on your property, and how complex the job is. As a general range for the Capital Region:
- Small trees (under 25 feet): $300 – $700
- Medium trees (25–60 feet): $700 – $1,500
- Large trees (60–80 feet): $1,500 – $2,500
- Very large or hazardous trees requiring crane or bucket truck: $2,500 and up
Trees close to your home, over a roof, near power lines, or in a tight access situation will cost more than the same tree standing in an open backyard. Stump grinding is typically priced separately.
We give free, no-obligation estimates. The only way to know exactly what your job will cost is to have someone walk the property — and we'll do that at no charge.
It depends on where you live. New York State itself does not require a permit for removing trees on private residential property, but many municipalities in the Capital Region have their own local tree ordinances.
- City of Albany: Has a street tree ordinance; permits may be required for trees in the public right-of-way.
- Town of Clifton Park, Halfmoon, Colonie, and others: Regulations vary. Some towns require permits for removal of certain species or trees above a certain diameter.
- HOA communities: If you live in a neighborhood with a homeowners association, your HOA may have its own rules on tree removal, regardless of municipal requirements.
When we come out for an estimate, we'll let you know what we're aware of for your specific location. We always recommend checking with your town or village office if you're unsure. We've been working in this region for over 25 years and know the local landscape well.
Most single-tree removal jobs are completed in a half-day to a full day, depending on tree size and access. A straightforward removal of a medium-sized tree in an open area can take as little as 2–3 hours. A large tree near a structure that requires rigging, crane work, or careful sectional removal may take a full day or more.
We also handle full cleanup and debris removal as part of the job — we don't leave you with a pile of logs and branches in your yard. The property will be cleaned before our crew leaves.
Honestly, tree removal can be done safely any time of year — and sometimes waiting for "the right season" means waiting too long on a tree that's already a hazard.
That said, there are some practical considerations:
- Late fall through winter is often the easiest time for removal. Frozen ground reduces equipment impact on your lawn, leafless trees are easier to assess, and crews are often more available.
- Spring and summer work is equally doable, though access may be trickier, and scheduling fills faster during peak season.
- Never delay the removal of a tree that's actively dangerous. If a tree is leaning toward your house or has a significant structural failure, season doesn't matter — that tree needs to come down.

Costs, Insurance, and Payment
Sometimes — and the answer usually depends on where the tree lands, not just the fact that it fell.
Here's how it typically works:
- Tree falls on your home, garage, or fence: In most cases, your homeowners' insurance will cover removal of the tree and repair of the damaged structure, after your deductible. The tree is treated as a "falling object," which is a covered peril under most standard policies.
- A tree falls in your yard but hits nothing: Most policies will not cover removal in this situation. The cost is generally the homeowner's responsibility.
- Proactive removal of a living or hazardous tree: Standard homeowners' insurance does not cover elective removal, even if the tree is leaning dangerously. This is typically the homeowner's expense.
- Your neighbor's tree falls on your property: Your own insurance covers the damage to your property; your neighbor's liability only comes into play if negligence can be proven (e.g., they were warned the tree was dead and did nothing).
We always recommend calling your insurance company directly before assuming you're covered or not. We can also provide documentation and photos to support your claim if needed.
Not automatically — stump grinding is almost always a separate line item. Once a tree is removed, the stump remains in the ground unless grinding is specifically added to the job.
Stump grinding costs depend on the diameter of the stump, but for most residential stumps in the Capital Region, pricing typically runs $100–$300 per stump. If you have multiple stumps, the per-unit cost often comes down.
We recommend grinding stumps rather than leaving them. Stumps can become tripping hazards, they attract wood-boring insects, and they can put out new shoots for years if the root system is still active. When you request your estimate, let us know if you'd like stump grinding included.

Tree Health and Safety
This is one of the most important questions a homeowner can ask. Trees don't always look dangerous from the ground, and by the time one fails, it's too late. Here are the warning signs that a tree deserves a closer professional look:
- Significant lean — especially if it wasn't leaning that much a year ago
- Large dead branches (called "widow makers") hanging in the canopy
- Cracks or splits in the main trunk or major limbs
- Hollow sections or visible cavities in the trunk
- Mushrooms or fungal growth at the base — often a sign of internal decay
- Roots that are damaged, exposed, or lifting from the ground
- The tree has lost a major limb in a storm and hasn't been assessed since
- Branches overhanging your roof, driveway, or a neighbor's property
If you're seeing any of these, don't wait for a storm to make the decision for you. Call us for a free assessment. Our certified arborists will give you an honest evaluation.
ISA stands for the International Society of Arboriculture — the leading professional organization for tree care. An ISA-certified arborist has passed a comprehensive exam covering tree biology, diagnosis, pruning, removal, and safety practices, and is required to maintain continuing education credits to keep certification active.
What it means for you: when you hire a certified arborist, you're hiring someone who has been tested and verified on the science and standards of proper tree care — not just someone with a truck and a chainsaw. It matters for complex jobs, liability, and getting an accurate assessment rather than an up-sell.
Clear Choice Tree Service has ISA-certified arborists on staff. We'll tell you what a tree actually needs, not what generates the biggest invoice.
Not necessarily, but it does need to be evaluated. A limb failure is often a symptom of something happening inside the tree — decay, structural weakness, root stress — that may or may not affect the rest of the tree.
After any significant storm damage, we recommend having an arborist assess the remaining structure before drawing conclusions. Some trees lose a major limb and recover well with proper pruning. Others show a pattern of failure that makes continued risk unacceptable. We'll give you an honest answer either way.
It depends on the cause and severity of the lean or damage. Some situations are correctable — young trees that have shifted in saturated soil can sometimes be staked and reoriented. A tree with disease in one section may be treatable if the main structure is sound.
However, a mature tree with significant lean due to root failure, a trunk with major structural cracks, or widespread internal decay is generally not a candidate for saving. The cost and risk of attempting to stabilize a fundamentally compromised tree usually outweigh any benefit.
Our arborists approach every tree with the goal of preservation when it's genuinely viable — and honest removal recommendations when it's not.

Yes. Clear Choice Tree Service is fully licensed and insured to operate in New York State. We carry liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage. Never hire a tree service — no matter how low the price — without confirming they carry both. Tree work is inherently dangerous, and an uninsured crew on your property puts you at financial and legal risk if something goes wrong.
We'll provide proof of insurance on request. It's a reasonable thing to ask for.

For non-emergency work, scheduling depends on the time of year. Spring and summer are our busiest seasons. We always recommend calling sooner rather than later to get on the schedule.
Yes. Cleanup is part of every job. We remove all cut material, branches, and debris before we leave. We also do our best to minimize impact on your lawn, garden beds, and landscaping during the work itself — using ground protection when needed and being deliberate about equipment placement.
If you'd like to keep wood rounds for firewood, just let us know at the time of the estimate.
These terms are often used interchangeably, but there's a real distinction:
- Trimming typically refers to cutting back growth for aesthetic reasons — shaping the tree, reducing canopy spread, and keeping branches away from a structure.
- Pruning is done for the health of the tree — removing dead, diseased, or structurally compromised wood, improving airflow through the canopy, and reducing future failure risk.
Good tree care usually involves both. Our arborists will tell you what's appropriate for your specific trees and situation.
