Free Estimate vs. Arborist Inspection: Which One Do You Need?

October 30, 2026

A free estimate tells you what a specific tree job will cost. An arborist inspection tells you what is actually going on with your tree: its health, its structure, and the risk it poses. If you already know the work you want done, start with a free estimate. If you need answers about the tree itself, or documentation for insurance, a neighbor, or a sale, book an inspection.

Homeowners ask us about this all the time, and it is a fair question. Both visits involve someone from Clear Choice Tree Service walking your property and looking at your trees. The difference is what you walk away with. Here is how the two compare, what each one costs, and how to decide.

What is a free estimate?

A free estimate is a no-cost visit to price a job you are considering, such as a removal, pruning, or stump grinding. We look at the tree, the access, what sits nearby, and the equipment the job will need, then give you a written quote for the work.

A free estimate is the right fit when:

  • You already know a tree needs to come down or be trimmed

  • You want a price on stump grinding or cleanup

  • You are comparing quotes before scheduling work

We will always share what we notice along the way. If something looks off, we will say so. But a free estimate is focused on the job, not a full evaluation of the tree's condition.

What is an arborist inspection?

An arborist inspection is a dedicated, paid visit where an ISA-certified arborist from Clear Choice Tree Service evaluates the health and structure of your trees. The goal is not to price a job. It is to give you a clear, professional opinion on what is happening and what, if anything, should be done.

During an inspection, the arborist looks closely at the canopy, trunk, root zone, and surrounding conditions. That can include signs of decay, disease, insect activity such as emerald ash borer, storm damage, cracks, lean, and soil or root problems. You get time to ask questions and talk through options, including whether a tree can be saved.

How much does an arborist inspection cost?

Clear Choice Tree Service offers two types of arborist inspections. A one-hour verbal inspection is $150, and a one-hour written inspection is $250. If the inspection needs more than an hour, each additional hour is $100.

Verbal inspection

$150

$100

An on-site walk-through with spoken findings and recommendations

Written inspection

$250

$100

On-site findings plus a written report you can keep and share

Most single-property inspections fit within the first hour. Larger properties, multiple trees, or more complex concerns may take longer, and we will let you know up front if we expect that.

Should I choose a verbal or written inspection?

Choose a verbal inspection if the answers are just for you. Choose a written inspection if anyone else needs to see the findings.

A verbal inspection works well when you want an expert opinion to make your own decision, such as whether to keep a tree, how to care for it, or whether a problem is serious.

A written inspection is worth it when you need documentation, for example:

  • Insurance claims: supporting a claim after storm damage, or showing the cause of a tree failure

  • Neighbor concerns: documenting the condition of a tree on or near a property line

  • Buying or selling a home: giving buyers, sellers, or agents a record of tree condition

  • HOA or municipal requests: providing professional support for a removal or permit question

  • Ongoing monitoring: creating a baseline to compare against in future seasons

When do I need an arborist inspection instead of a free estimate?

Book an inspection when your question is about the tree, not the price of the work. Common reasons include:

  • You are not sure whether a tree is healthy, declining, or dead

  • A tree lost a major limb in a storm, and you want to know if the rest is safe

  • You see mushrooms at the base, cavities, cracks, or bark coming away from the trunk

  • A tree has started to lean, or the soil around it has lifted

  • You want to save a valuable or sentimental tree and need a care plan

  • You need written documentation for an insurer, neighbor, buyer, or town

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the free estimate really free?
Yes. Clear Choice Tree Service provides free, no-obligation estimates for tree work. There is no consultation fee and no pressure to book.
Why does an arborist inspection cost money if estimates are free?
An inspection is a professional evaluation, not a sales visit. It takes dedicated time from an ISA-certified arborist, and a written inspection also includes preparing a report you can use with insurers, neighbors, or buyers.
Will a written inspection help with my insurance claim?
It can. A written assessment from a certified arborist can support your position when there is a question about a tree's health or why it failed. Coverage decisions are always up to your insurer, so we also recommend contacting your carrier.
Does an arborist inspection mean my tree will be removed?
No. Many inspections end with a recommendation to prune, monitor, or simply leave the tree alone. Our arborists recommend removal only when it is genuinely the right call.
Can I start with a free estimate and book an inspection later?
Yes. If something comes up during a free estimate that calls for a closer look, we will tell you honestly, and you can decide whether an inspection makes sense.
How long does an arborist inspection take?
Most inspections are completed within one hour. Properties with several trees or more involved concerns may take longer, billed at $100 for each additional hour.
